Joint Media Release – Kelvin Thomson MP and Jane Garrett MP – Community Safety in Brunswick Forum
22 October 2012
Federal Member for Wills, Kelvin Thomson, and State Member for Brunswick, Jane Garrett, have today announced they will be hosting a forum about Community Safety in Brunswick on Monday 19th November, in conjunction with Victoria Police, Moreland Council, and other community leaders.
“The intention of the forum will not be to promote fear or hysteria, but neither should it sweep anything under the carpet. It should be a clear-eyed and honest discussion about how we are travelling in terms of public safety, and what positive things we can do to make this community safer”, Mr Thomson said.
The Forum will provide the local community with the opportunity to hear directly from Police, Council, and other community leaders about the work being done to improve community safety.
“This forum will also allow local residents to share their views on possible initiatives relating to, addressing violence against women, CCTV cameras, late night bars and clubs, police visibility, street lighting, taxi services, public transport, and what actions we need to take to make our community a safer place”, Ms Garrett said.
“On September 30th 30,000 residents marched down Sydney Road in a clear and unequivocal show of strength to say that Jill Meagher’s violent and senseless death and any violence against women is never acceptable. We want to work with the community to help make Brunswick a safer place”, Mr Thomson said.
“Our local community has been deeply shocked by the recent events surrounding the death of Jill Meagher. Building on the tremendous public displays of grief and solidarity, this forum will be an avenue for concerns and ideas to be aired, giving clear feedback for actions required and forms part of the process of rebuilding community confidence”, Ms Garrett said.
The forum will take place on Monday 19th November at 7pm at the Brunswick Town Hall on Sydney Road. Residents interested in coming along are encouraged to contact Jane’s office on 9384 1241 or Kelvin’s office on 9350 5777 to register their attendance.
