THREE WOMEN FROM BRUNSWICK ELEVATED TO VICTORIA’S HONOUR ROLL FOR WOMEN
Ms Sherryl Garbutt, Ms Virginia Geddes and Dr Georgia Paxton are among twenty women being inducted onto the 2016 Victorian Honour Roll of Women.
Each year, a number of Victorian women who have made significant contributions at a local, state, national or international level are inducted to the Honour Roll as a way of acknowledging their achievements.
Ms Sherryl Garbutt has a long-standing commitment to protecting the environment and championing women’s rights and social justice. Her work as a Victorian Minister in portfolios including Community Services, Women’s Affairs, and Environment and Conservation resulted, among other things, in the establishment of Marine National Parks and Box Ironbark National Parks, the development of the Women’s Safety Strategy and the establishment of the Victorian Children’s Council. Sherryl continues her work as a member of ‘Our Watch’ Board, the national agency to prevent violence against women and their children.
Ms Virginia Geddes is a lifelong advocate for women’s rights who has nearly 40 years’ experience campaigning to address and prevent violence against women and children. Virginia was active in the state-wide networking and advocacy that culminated in the peak organisation, Domestic Violence Victoria.
Dr Georgia Paxton has dedicated more than a decade to improving the life of refugees and asylum seekers. Dr Paxton is Head of the Royal Children’s Hospital Immigrant Health Service. Georgia has made an invaluable contribution to sustainability of healthcare services for Victoria’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Her efforts have resulted in better screening, identification, treatment and management of illness prevention for children and vulnerable groups.
Minister for Women, Fiona Richardson, said that each inductee to the Honour Roll had a unique and extraordinary story which would inspire future generations of young women to strive and to realise their full potential.
