Moreland unemployment rate defies the odds with steady drop

BEAU DONELLY

Moreland’s unemployment rate has dropped steadily over the past 12 months, bucking local, state and national trends.

Labour force data shows almost 1000 people in Moreland got jobs in the year to March, bringing the city’s unemployment rate down to 3.9 per cent, a 1.2 per cent decrease.

But unemployment rates in the neighbouring cities of Melbourne, Yarra and Darebin have risen across the board with an additional 900 people joining the jobless queue.

Darebin had the highest unemployment rate – up 0.1 per cent in the March quarter to 6.6 per cent.

The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the state unemployment rate is 5.8 per cent and the national rate is 5.7 per cent, the highest since September 2009.
