It was a great pleasure to attend the Coburg RSL Remembrance Day services on Sunday, 6 November, and to lay a wreath on behalf of the constituents of my electorate in honour of this country’s brave servicemen and women. I acknowledge and congratulate the president of the Coburg sub-branch, David Thompson, and the Treasurer, John Paterson, who presided over the event with grace and care. I also acknowledge the secretary of the Coburg RSL, Godfrey Camenzuli, and commend Des Bourke on his stirring recital of the ode.
Also present at the event was Senator David Feeney, the federal Parliamentary Secretary of Defence, who delivered a fine keynote address, and the mayor of Moreland, Cr Oscar Yildiz.
The service was extremely moving and once again provided the local community with an opportunity to remember and to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifices across many conflicts that have been made on behalf of all of us with heartfelt thanks. The beautiful music, which was an integral part of the experience, was provided by the Moreland City Band and Mr Ian Arrell on the bagpipes. It was a pleasure to catch up with members of the RSL and their families after the service in the clubrooms. Many of these members have connections in the Coburg area which stretch back generations. I thank the Coburg RSL and its members for inviting me to be part of this most important occasion in this most important of weeks on the Australian calendar. Lest we forget.
